Oildale Mutual Water Company is a private, not-for-profit corporation which was founded by area citizens to represent the interests of its customers/stockholders. Each of the 8,000+ retail customers is also a stockholder, having a personal interest in the company. Since its foundation in 1919, the Company has been committed to providing the best quality water available at the least cost to its customers/stockholders.
The current service area encompasses approximately 10 square miles, north of the City of Bakersfield in Kern County, at the south end of the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 110 miles north of Los Angeles and 290 miles southwest of San Francisco.
The California State Water Project, a water storage and delivery system of reservoirs, aqueducts, power plants, and pumping plants, delivers 95% of our water from Northern California, specifically the Feather River. It is routed by way of the San Francisco Bay-Delta, which is the major distribution hub for most of the state's fresh water supply, through the State Water Project (SWP) Aqueduct. The Kern County Water Agency purchases and supplies State Project water for all of Kern County. Improvement District Number Four, one of seven service areas, is the sub-unit of the Kern County Water Agency that serves most of the urban Bakersfield area. It was formed to alleviate groundwater overdraft in metropolitan Bakersfield and outlying areas. It provides both treated and untreated water to three local water wholesalers, including the North of the River Municipal Water District, which is a public agency that purchases water from the State Water Project, and then provides it to Oildale Mutual Water Company, as well as to its own retail customers. Additionally, the Company owns and operates several groundwater wells, which are presently used for peaking and emergency back-up supply.
